my backstory

Everything seemed normal from the time I was born, but when I turned two years old, I became deaf. As a young girl, I struggled to understand "who I am" and to explore the experience of being deaf. My old school kicked me out due to behavioural problems, and I struggled with the deaf experience.

Being the only deaf child in a hearing family was confusing for me. I needed help understanding their speech and was not good at lip-reading. However, when I moved to The Royal School of Deaf Children, I was frustrated with the deaf experience. Thankfully, my school taught me about my identity and helped me understand what it's like to be deaf.

Dealing with anger issues and emotional problems was a significant challenge for me. I felt like I couldn't control these emotions, which was overwhelming. But my teacher Viv helped me understand myself better and gave me some practical advice. She said, "Whenever you feel upset and frustrated, focus on what you're thinking about." Her words helped me gain more control over my emotions and better understand myself.

Another person who helped me on my journey was my staff member, Sam, who is also deaf. She encouraged me to learn about my deaf identity and to find my own deaf experience. This helped me realise that I could learn from my experiences and discover who I am. Sam also introduced me to a therapist specialising in emotions and anger problems. This therapist taught me how to play with things and draw my feelings, anger, and loneliness.

When I turned 12 or 13, my social worker gave me small gifts, including a diary. She told me to write down my problems in my secret book. This inspired me to find my voice and explore my deaf identity experience. I felt very frustrated with my deaf life, but this moment of inspiration helped me improve my situation.

Later, when I saw my cousin selling her book on mental health and more, I got an idea. I wanted to create a special journal for deaf and hearing-impaired people. This would help them explore their own experiences and find their own identities. My journey has been challenging, but I'm grateful for the people who helped me along the way.

My journey began with a decision to start a blog about deaf life. The experience was truly inspirational, and it led me to explore new avenues of self-expression. In fact, I began writing a book that delved deeper into my emotions, mental health, and anger issues. It was a cathartic process, and it helped me come to terms with some of the challenges I faced as a deaf individual. As I entered 2021, I realized that I needed to address my anger issues and mental health in a more proactive manner. So, I consulted with my therapist and began working on strategies that would enable me to manage my emotions more effectively. In the meantime, I faced some challenges in my professional life. Despite my qualifications, I found it difficult to secure a job that was suitable for my needs. That's when I decided to plan my own small business, one that would cater to the needs of deaf and loss-of-hearing individuals. To get started, I began researching the experiences of deaf and loss-of-hearing people. I thought about the concept of the deaf journey and life experience, and I realized that there was a lot of untapped potential in this area. That's when I came up with the idea of selling books that focused on the deaf experience, mental health, emotions, and more. I reached out to my deaf friends for support, and they gave me some wonderful ideas and vision questions. For instance, they suggested that I incorporate simple therapy techniques into my book, and that I explore the idea of the deaf experience as something that becomes a part of who you are. Overall, my journey has been a challenging but rewarding one. I'm excited to see where my small business will take me, and I'm grateful for the support of my friends and family. I hope that my work will inspire others to embrace their deafness and celebrate their unique experiences.
